Alphabet's Schmidt to Step Down From Executive Chair Role

We haven't heard anything new from Alphabet lately except when we learned Google CEO Sundar Pichai was appointed to Alphabet Inc's Board of Directors.

Schmidt revealed that he, Larry, Sergey and Sundar agreed the move as in the best interests of the company and its evolution, adding that the Alphabet structure is working well, and that Google and its ancilliary activities "are thriving".

Schmidt said in a statement that he planned to spend more time "on science and technology issues, and philanthropy", which is more or less what he's been doing anyway since the creation of Alphabet. Schmidt also plans to devote more time to philanthropy.

Schmidt has served in senior roles at Google since 2001 when he was first brought on by Sergey Brian and Larry Page to serve as Google's chief executive.

It is certainly an end of an era. Around the time of the company's 2004 IPO, the trio reportedly pledged to work together for another 20 years.

Schmidt will become a technical adviser and continue to sit on the board of the company that was formed to contain Google and its sprawling so-called "moonshot" subsidiary businesses in 2015.

"I'm incredibly excited about the progress our companies are making, and about the strong leaders who are driving that innovation", he said. But it is one of the most significant personnel shifts at the Internet giant since Page took over as chief executive in 2011, and especially because Schmidt has been such a willing public face of the company for so long.

Through a Google spokesman, Schmidt declined to comment. He made it clear that the company appreciated everything Schmidt had done for the company "particularly as we restructured from Google to Alphabet".

Some gaffes by Schmidt over the years have also received attention. This week and after 17 years of service, he is stepping down from his position as Executive Chairman of Alphabet.

The company is also in the midst of a nightmare with the European Commission.
