More than 80,000 Alabama children stand to lose their health insurance on February 1 unless Congress restores funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program, state health officials have announced. Thirty-one states are in jeopardy of seeing the funding vanish sooner than expected, according to the report.

A separate study by Georgetown University's Center for Children and Families estimated that without the money from Thursday's short-term extension, 25 states would run out of money by the end of January, with 1.9 million children potentially losing coverage.

"This action highlights Congress' continued inability and failure to prioritize and protect the health of children and a very popular and successful program".

CT plans to end its HUSKY B children's health coverage January 31 unless additional federal funding becomes available, according to The Hill. But the federal government announced on December 15 they'd fork over $136 million to continue funding CHIP in Texas until February, while Congress tries to figure out a long-term solution.

I can not imagine the hardships the concerned parents are going through thinking about their Children's health situation and not knowing, if the program would continue.

Some states that are almost out of money are preparing to freeze enrollment or cancel CHIP coverage if lawmakers don't soon reach a deal.

Democrats demanded Wednesday that their colleagues across the aisle reauthorize health coverage for millions of low-income kids whose insurance is at risk of running out.

Kelly Haight, spokeswoman for North Carolina's health department, said the state's 220,000 children receiving assistance under the program "will not experience any interruption in benefits at this time" because the state had enough money for the beginning of 2018. It now has enough money to keep operating through January. CMS and the states have been scrambling to shift other funds around to keep the program going. Less than 10 percent would qualify for Medicaid, she says, and many families would find subsidized coverage for children in the Affordable Care Act's online marketplaces too costly because it often comes with higher premiums, copayments and deductibles. The 20-year-old program cost about $15.6 billion in fiscal 2016, funded nearly entirely by the federal government.

The Senate Finance Committee easily approved its own five-year measure in October, but that bill lacked offsetting savings to pay for the extra money. "The family does not have to make that decision of health care versus the bills and food for the family; Community Health Net will be there".
