NASA has announced that the supermoon at the end of the month will feature a total lunar eclipse.
Nichols-Yehling says a supermoon appears 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter.
The peak of the shower was January 3, a waning full moon may interfere with observing these meteors, NASA stated.
The last time two blue moons occurred within a year was 19 years ago, said Mok Li Hui, a Science Educator at the Science Centre Singapore (SCS).
Blue Moons aren't unique as they happen around once every 2.7 years because the number of days in a new moon to new moon is a bit less than the usual calendar month.
"The lunar eclipse on January 31 will be visible during moonset".
2018 will be a year of blue moons, as another one is due to appear on March 31. The moon experiences perigree once per orbit, but that doesn't always coincide with a full moon. This happens when the earth is in a position between the moon and the soon which blots out the view of the moon. With that being said, the event is still very rare. This occurrence is also known as "blood moon", based on the reddish hue.
