Feinstein said she released the transcript to set the record straight.
The Democrat lawmakers echoed this position, branding the call for a criminal investigation as a crass "miscalculation" on the part of the GOP committee members. Later, as Trump's pathway to the Republican nomination became more assured, the firm was hired by the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee to continue that research.
The Washington research firm has been under attack by the White House and Republican lawmakers over the dossier, which is central to investigations in Congress and by a federal special counsel into allegations that Russian Federation interfered in the election to help Trump win, and any potential collusion by the Trump campaign. His firm paid former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele to compile the Trump-Russia dossier.
Russian Federation has repeatedly denied allegations of meddling in the USA election and Trump denies any collusion between his campaign and Moscow officials.
"I understand Chris severed his relationship with the FBI out of concern that he didn't know what was happening inside the FBI and there was a concern that the FBI was being manipulated for political ends by the Trump people", Simpson told the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Simpson said only that the person had not been a source of Steele's, and that Simpson believed the person "was a voluntary source, someone who was concerned about the same concerns we had".
"Somebody's already been killed as a result of the publication of this dossier, and no harm should come to anybody related to this honest work", Levy added.
Levy did not expand on that claim in the interview, nor is there any public information that would tie a specific killing to information in the dossier.
He also said that Fusion GPS had not been cooperative and the company had previously requested confidentiality.
Dianne Feinstein released the transcript from an August closed-door committee interview with Glenn Simpson after the Republican chairman of the committee, Iowa Sen. The diplomat then relayed this information to American officials, sparking the FBI investigation into the Trump campaign. He invited Mr. Simpson to instead testify publicly. Lindsay Graham last week asked the Justice Department to investigate Steele, saying they had information that he may have made false statements to the government. Democrats say such attacks are an effort to discredit the ongoing probe by special counsel Robert Mueller into whether any Trump associates coordinated with Russian agents to interfere in the presidential election.
