HP recalling some overheating batteries. Three of those incidents resulted in property damage totaling $4,500, and in one instance a user suffered a "minor injury" from a first-degree burn to the hand.
The company also provided instructions on how to check if your laptop has a defective battery. If you do not meet those requirements, you can download the fully loaded battery validation utility (available here), which will install the necessary frameworks. While that should be enough to prevent the laptop owners from panicking, they are nonetheless advised to visit the specific site HP has set up to allay any fears or confusion out of this. HP is also providing a BIOS update that places the battery in "Battery Safety Mode" so that the notebook or workstation can be safely used without the battery by connecting to an HP power adapter. 'During the reboot process, an option will be presented to enable Battery Safety Mode, ' HP explains.
