The death toll of the avalanche that hit Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara on Friday mounted to eight on Saturday. The person identified s Ghulam Nabi Bhat s/o Ali Mohd Bhat of Kalmoona, Taratpora was immediacy shifted to nearby hospital for treatment.
Officials told UNI over phone from Kupwara on Saturday that rescue operation continued throughout the night though there was intermittent snowfall and poor visibility.
Locals protested against the authorities, demanding construction of a tunnel to avoid frequent accident on the Kupwara-Tangdhar road, particularly at Sadhna top.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has expressed grief and sorrow over the incident.
The chief minister conveyed her sympathies to the bereaved families, he said.
Minister for Disaster Management, Relief Rehabilitation & Reconstruction and Floriculture, Javaid Mustafa Mir has announced compensation under SDRF of Rs 4 lakh each to the next kin of the family of persons who were killed in the snow avalanche.
Mir also issued directions to provide better medical facilities to the injured, the spokesman said.
