Trump administration sues California over laws shielding immigrants sArtHead =

Brown and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra held a press conference at the Capitol to defend the laws following a speech by Sessions to a law enforcement conference in downtown Sacramento on Wednesday morning.

The nation's top cop spoke at a meeting with the California Peace Officers Association in Sacramento Wednesday.

The latest development in this saga, however, greatly ups the ante with regards to the state's sanctuary laws and sanctuary cities, the protections which are in place to shield undocumented immigrants from the deportation demands of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (otherwise known as "ICE").

Shortly after Sessions' speech to law enforcement officials, the Democratic governor accused the attorney general of lying and trying to appease President Donald Trump. Governor Jerry Brown has called Sessions's move an effort to "further divide and polarize America" at a time of great political stress.

Sessions attacked California lawmakers for what he viewed as obstruction against immigration agents doing their jobs. Rather than effectively force millions of hardworking immigrant families to go underground, the state imposes some very basic and modest limitations on the circumstances in which it gives ICE the run of the place.

"You can sue us, you can talk about jailing us, you can threaten us, you can seek to intimidate us it doesn't matter", Steinberg said. Another stops local governments from contracting with for-profit companies and ICE to hold immigrants.

California, one of the country's largest, wealthiest and most progressive states, has battled with the administration since Trump took office in January 2017 over his immigration crackdown.

"This is basically going to war against the state of California, the engine of the American economy", Brown said. He had particularly strong words for Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, who issued an unusual public warning last month about an immigration operation. "We're not in the business of deportations". "It's not wise, it's not right and it will not stand". "Her actions support those who flout the law and boldly validates illegality", the attorney general said.

"There is no nullification; there is no secession", Sessions said.

In a statement past year the association's president, Gardena Police Chief Ed Madrano, said the compromise "addresses the significant public safety concerns we raised during this debate, and it reaffirms what we have held since the beginning, which is that California law enforcement should not be used to assist in mass deportations". But it looks like he's directly taking on his new nemesis: the state of California.

"Those are 800 wanted criminals that are now at large in that community - 800 wanted criminals that ICE will now have to pursue by other means, with more difficulty in unsafe situations - all because of one irresponsible action", Sessions said.

"I understand that we have a wide variety of political opinions out there on immigration, but the law is in the books and its goal is clear".

Dozens of demonstrators have gathered in Sacramento, California, to protest an appearance by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
