On September 5, 2017, Gauri was shot dead by unknown by assailants outside her residence in Bengaluru. "That number is given at the time of charge sheet". According to media reports, Naveen was caught by the crime wing of the state police's central crime branch on February 18.
The SIT also charged Kumar with plotting to assassinate Mysuru-based writer and rationalist K S Bhagawan. Kumar has been in SIT custody since March 2.
Gauri Lankesh was a respected senior journalist and a well-known critic of right-wing forces. The police also reportedly recovered a.32 bore rifle and 15 live cartridges from Kumar.
The SIT has sought permission to conduct narco-analysis test on the accused and court has reserved its orders on the matter and posted the case to March 12th.
Sources in the police said Naveen had given voluntary statements to the SIT during interrogation of his links to the murder. They have claimed to make their first arrest in connection to the murder of the Kannad journalist.
The advocate, Virendra Ichalkaranjikar, who is head of the Sanstha-linked Hindu Vidhidnya Parishad, was part of a press conference of Sanatan Sanstha and the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) on the Gauri Lankesh case in September past year.
Naveen hails from Birur, Chikkamagalur in Karnataka. The group was earlier accused of being involved in the murder of a well-known atheist.
It is believed that Naveen and his brother started the Sene after a brief interaction with the Bajrang Dal, as it was said that they wanted to create a separate base of their own. He was also at the Sanstha headquarters in Goa for several days previous year for a conference.
