President Trump Makes Decision About Transgender Troops

Over three tweets, with no explanation or official follow up from the Pentagon, he wrote: "After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military".

In another end-of-week news dump, the White House on Friday night released a memorandum effectively banning transgender people from serving in the military, following through on orders Donald Trump issued on Twitter last summer.

The policy recommendation that President Trump approved flatly states, "Transgender persons who require or have undergone gender transition are disqualified from military service", The New York Times reported.

Trump issued orders to ban transgender troops who require significant medical treatment to be exempt from the US military with the exception of select cases.

The policy will allow Transgendered individuals who now occupy a rank to remain in uniform, but they will have to submit to their sex assigned at birth.

"There is simply no way to spin it, the Trump-Pence Administration is going all in on its discriminatory, unconstitutional and despicable ban on transgender troops", said HRC President Chad Griffin.

Additionally, troops who haven't had gender reassignment surgery can stay so long as they have been "medically stable for 36 months consecutive months in their biological sex before joining the military and are able to deploy across the world". The military has subsequently accepted at least one openly transgender recruit in 2018.

This new policy by the US Prez was in reversal to the former Prez Barack Obama's policy.

Trump's efforts have faced a number of serious setbacks, including multiple lawsuits arguing that banning a group of people from the military on the basis of their gender identity is unconstitutional. "It is reverse-engineered for the sole goal of carrying out President Trump's reckless and unconstitutional ban, undermining the ability of transgender service members to serve openly and military readiness as a whole".

Anywhere between 4,000 and 10,000 transgender people are now serving as active-duty and reserve service members.

Mattis recommended that anyone diagnosed with gender dysphoria, the condition of wanting to transition gender, since the Obama administration ended the Pentagon's longtime ban on transgender service in 2016 may continue to serve.

The Justice Department said in a statement late Friday that it would defend the Pentagon's authority to "implement personnel policies they have determined are necessary to best defend our nation" and would ask the courts to lift all related preliminary injunctions.

"This policy is not based on an evaluation of new evidence", said Joshua Block, a senior staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union's LGBT and HIV Project, commenting on the new policy.

Instead, it issued new policy guidance to recruits to explain how to enlist transgender men and women, and stated in a policy paper that the guidance "shall remain in effect until expressly revoked".

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement that Trump had rescinded his previous policy to allow this new policy to take its place. The Pentagon responded by allowing those serving to stay in the military, and began allowing transgender individuals to enlist beginning January 1. They said they would continue to fight the policy in the courts.
