Orissa has 10 members in the Rajya Sabha. The list also includes Bhupendra Yadav, general secretary of the party, who will again contest from Rajasthan. He is retiring as a member of the Upper House from Madhya Pradesh. However, it is still away from achieving a majority in the house. BJP president Amit Shah had aimed for 150 seats out of 182 in Gujarat in the December elections, and the slide to 99 was seen as a personal setback for him and Prime Minister Modi.
As per the notification, filing of nomination papers will commence from the date of notification on March 5 and will continue till March 12.
Senior Congress leaders are likely to insist on fielding former Knowledge Commission chairman, Sam Pitroda or party veteran Janardhan Diwedi from Karnataka for one of the three seats from the state which the party is aiming to win in the forthcoming Rajya Sabha polls on March 23.
