Three of the 15 injured people were in critical condition, the RCMP said.
Humboldt is part of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, which is open to players 20 years or younger, according to CTV News.
Michelle Straschnitzki, who lives in Airdrie, Alberta, said her 18-year old son Ryan was transported to a hospital in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
The team was on its way to play in Game 5 of a semi-final against the Nipawin Hawks.
"Some of them are waiting to hear if their kids are alive", he said.
The horrific crash shook the entire hockey world, sparking a widespread outpouring of grief and condolences for the families of the dead and injured and the tight-knit community of Humboldt.
"I can't imagine being the parent or the wife or the kids at home going through something like this", Toronto Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said at a press conference.
Darren Opp, president of the Nipawin Hawks, said a semi T-boned the players' bus.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted his support for Humboldt.
"We're a really small community, and all of us here in Humboldt are definitely somehow connected to the team", Kellington told paNOW.
Garinger, who has one of the players living in his home, said they still do not know his fate.
Jaxon Joseph, who was 20 years old, played for the Surrey Eagles for the 2015-2016 season, said the team's general manager and former head coach Blaine Neufeld.
Those involved with hockey - especially at the junior level - brought up the bus rides the players and staff embark on on a daily basis.
Garinger said he and family members are waiting to get more information. On a day such as Saturday, he thinks about the players that he's connected with and who have gone on off to play in hockey's bus leagues. "We know that the coroner and their office needs to do their work and let families know".
"It's a great little farming town of around 6,000, and that hockey team is everything to the people, " Giles said.
"The biggest thing is, we just gotta support that community right now because they're going to be needing it".
Three STARS Air Ambulance helicopters were dispatched to the scene after the crash. "I have never seen so many emergency vehicles in such a close proximity before", he said.
"It's one of the hardest days of my life", said Kevin Garinger, the president of the team, via The Globe and Mail.
Friday's crash is not the first highway accident to kill hockey players in Saskatchewan. The Humboldt group took the Swift Current Broncos up on their offer of an affiliation between the Western Canada Hockey League Broncos and a new junior-A club. Haugan's sister wrote on Twitter. Edmontonian Jaxon Joseph, who formerly played for the St. Albert Raiders and is the son of former National Hockey League defensemen Chris Josep, 21-year-old defensemen Stephen Wack and 18-year-old Logan Hunter, both of St. Albert, Alta., have also died.
