Straw glass water splash drops water drops jar

The proposed ban would only apply in England, but Scotland has already banned the sale of plastic cotton buds and indicated it is looking to do the same with plastic straws.

According to the United Kingdom government, 1 million birds and more than 100,000 sea mammals die every year from eating and getting tangled in plastic waste.

The UK government has announced plans to ban the sale of plastic straws, drink stirrers, and plastic-stemmed cotton buds in an effort to cut down on single-use plastics waste.

'Stamping them out, along with cotton buds, stirrers and other needless plastic, is another step towards ending the scourge of plastic choking our oceans and killing our precious marine wildlife.

Earlier this week it also committed £60m to help Commonwealth nations tackle plastic pollution, as part of a new Clean Oceans Alliance.

The move is aimed at protecting rivers and oceans from the growing problem of plastic pollution.

The government will commit £61.4 million (70 million euros, $87 million) for global research and to improve waste management in developing countries, she added.

The move, expected to come into force as early as next year, is created to curb "society's addiction" to throwaway products, the environment secretary writes in The Times.

The proposal, which is subject to consultation, was announced Thursday at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London.

'Together we can effect real change so that future generations can enjoy a natural environment that is healthier than we now find it'.

"[Marine plastic pollution is] one of the most significant environmental challenges facing the world today, it is vital that we tackle this issue, so that future generations can enjoy a natural environment that is healthier than we now find it", May said. The ban will also not apply for medical reasons.

A report published this month that showed a significant drop in the number of plastic bags littering Britain's seabeds suggests that efforts to reduce their use by imposing a charge are working.

Environmental lobby groups have long campaigned for retailers to phase out non-recyclable plastic products. "We are supportive of interventions that will help consumers distinguish, and we look forward to engaging constructively with the government".
