In a speech on tax reform at the White Sulphur Springs Civic Center, President Trump was flanked by two of the three candidates in the state's May 8 Republican primary - U.S. Rep. Evan Jenkins and state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey - as he attacked Manchin.
Mr. Trump and other Republicans are focusing on the benefits of the tax overhaul they pushed through Congress a year ago, ahead of midterm elections this fall.
Sitting in front of an American flag and a backdrop that read "USA Open For Business", Trump, along with Sen. Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat who voted against the measure.
President Trump is heading Thursday to West Virginia, the state that voted for him by the largest margin in the 2016 election. Everybody said, 'Oh, he was so tough, ' and I used the word rape.
Families, business owners, and law makers were all invited to listen to the stories of West Virginians who were able to put money back into their pockets after the tax cut bill was passed.
Trump suggested a troop number after attending a tax cut event in which he he gave remarks on just about everything but taxes, including unproven claims of voter fraud and alleged migrant violence. Sue Cline, the sate senator from the 9th District, said she was grateful for the opportunity to celebrate the success of West Virginians.
"You've made a huge difference", said Terry Dotson, a president, chairman and CEO of Worldwide Equipment who took part in Thursday's roundtable. "Millions and millions of people". Both praised the president and his agenda at the event.
"They cut people up, because a bullet is too quick", Trump said of MS-13.
In a Thursday morning tweet, the president credits "the strong immigration laws of Mexico and their willingness to use them". He told the audience that they would get "a chance to get a senator that's going to vote our program". He said other countries have much tougher immigration laws than the USA, and that even those who are caught illegally crossing the border receive easygoing treatment under current law, which he wants to change.
Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said she had been working with governors of the southwest border states to develop agreements on where and how many Guardsmen will be deployed.
