murder in an effort to catch those trying to kill him.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko blamed Moscow for wanting to kill Babchenko, and congratulated his country's security services for becoming stronger in the face of "Russian aggression".
Ukrainian officials asked him to participate in a sting operation to avoid being assassinated, he said.
Anton Gerashchenko, a Ukrainian MP who serves as an adviser to the interior minister, said on Facebook: "As a result of the brilliant special operation conducted by Ukrainian law enforcers, the killer who was ordered to kill Arkady and the organiser of the murder was detained".
"The important thing is my life has been saved and other, bigger terrorist attacks have been thwarted", he said.
That man in turn approached a former Ukrainian volunteer soldier to carry out the killing, Hrytsak said.
He has contributed to a number of media outlets including top opposition newspaper Novaya Gazeta and is an avid blogger, accusing Russian authorities of killing Kremlin critics and unleashing wars in Ukraine, Syria and elsewhere.
Original reports claimed Babchenko, a BBC News and Guardian contributor who was openly critical of Russia's relationship with Ukraine, had been shot to death in Kiev.
Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine's president, tweeted praising the efforts of security services and saying the operation had to take place for the safety of Babchenko and his family as Russian Federation was unlikely to back down.
The journalist said his home address was published online and the threats he received were made by phone, email and social media.
Babchenko did not take the intimidation too seriously, Ponomarev said Wednesday before the fact that the slaying was staged came out. He then he became a war reporter for several Russian newspapers.
Mr Babchenko's "killing" was the fourth of a Kremlin critic in the Ukrainian capital in two years.
Just hours before the shooting was reported, Babchenko wrote on Facebook that he considered the day a "second birthday" because it was the fourth anniversary of his missing a flight on a Ukrainian military helicopter that later was shot down in the conflict between Ukraine and Moscow-backed separatists in the eastern part of the country.
"And I was lucky".
