Meanwhile, the first stage carried out a series of maneuvers before touching down on the unmanned dronebarge "Of Course I Still Love You" in the Atlantic Ocean. That's more than half of the estimated overall $62 million price of the Falcon 9, according to various trade publications.
The nation's dream satellite, Bangabandhu-I, was launched in the early hours of today. As the second stage continued to power Bangabandhu-1 to a high geostationary transfer orbit, the first stage maneuvered its way back to Earth, pulling off a pinpoint touchdown on a robotic SpaceX "drone ship" stationed in the Atlantic Ocean almost 400 miles (630 kilometers) southeast of KSC.
The Marlin engine, which is located on the rocket's bottom, gives up to eight percent more force during take-off than previous versions.
Falcon 9 is scheduled to be certified by NASA for launching human beings.
But the primary goal of the mission is to get Bangabandhu-1 into orbit. But the U.S. space agency wants to observe at least seven launches before it agrees to use the rocket system for manned spacecraft. But in the eight-year history of flying Falcon 9 rockets, SpaceX has only ever sent the same rocket to space twice.
The satellite launch, done on behalf the Bangladesh government, will allow internet access to all corners of the country. "There are thousands and thousands and thousands of requirements", Musk said of the rocket.
SpaceX chief Elon Musk says the improved first-stage boosters on the rocket can be reused more than 10 times - even 100 - and require little or no prep work. The satellite was designed by Thales Alenia Space for the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission. It will be the country's first communications satellite at such a high altitude.
Ku-band covers Bangladesh and its territorial area of the Bay of Bengal, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Named after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of Bangladesh who was assassinated in 1975, the spacecraft will provide data services during a 15-year mission.
