Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May said she had proposed different options for a new customs arrangement with the EU

Theresa May confronted Jacob Rees-Mogg at a meeting with Tory MPs created to break the deadlock over Britain's future customs arrangements with the EU, The Times writes. The pair clashed yesterday over the impact of rival plans on the Irish border, in what witnesses described as the prime minister "sending a tough signal" to hardline Brexiteers that she was not prepared to jeopardise the Union. The exchange with Mr Rees-Mogg was prompted by his suggestion that Britain should keep the border open after Brexit, according to three sources.

Earlier this week, one Cabinet source told ITV, that May's preferred proposal - which Foreign Secretary Johnson described as "crazy"- was being prepared to "die with dignity".

Mrs May has asked two teams to three ministers to look at two customs options - a customs partnership and the so-called "max-fac" option.

A cross-party alliance of anti-Brexit lawmakers is also ratcheting up its efforts, now joined by former Labour Foreign Secretary David Miliband.

May splits up her warring ministers as she aims to finally find solution to Border

The UK is committed to leaving the current customs union when it exits the EU on 29 March 2019 and ministers are under pressure to agree soon on a successor arrangement amid divisions in cabinet.

Under the customs partnership model, Britain would collect customs union tariffs on the EU's behalf to prevent the need for checks on goods heading for the European single market when they reach the Irish border.

The Irish border issue remains the main obstacle to a Brexit divorce deal and if there's no agreement by later this year, then the United Kingdom faces the prospect of crashing out of the bloc.

His comments came as the Prime Minister insisted she could be trusted to deliver on Brexit.

Mr Green went on: "I, personally, am not yet convinced that you could have that in place by the end of 2020, at the end of the implementation period, and, therefore, you might need to bolt on to that another period, a sort of transition period into that, so that we know not only that it works, but that it works from day one".

What are the government's options?

Britain would remain in a full customs partnership with the European Union and strike small services-only trade deals.

But Mr Gove said: 'Across Government, across Cabinet, there is agreement that neither of these two models is absolutely flawless. "Because it is novel, because no model like this exists, there have to be significant question marks over the deliverability of it on time", Gove said.

"More than that - what the customs partnership requires the British government to do is in effect to act as the tax collector and very possibly the effective deliverer of regulation for the European Union".

Neither this option nor the alternative - a "maximum facilitation" arrangement using technology to ensure the seamless movement of goods - was "absolutely perfect", he acknowledged. "And we are listening to what he said and we are doing what he wants". "That is the only way to resolve this impasse".

The health secretary has told Boris Johnson to keep his disagreements over Brexit private, warning that open expressions of dissent could mean a worse deal for the UK.

"I don't believe in an extension", he said. "He is saying any infrastructure on the border, any physical infrastructure on the border, is going to represent a risk to his officers".

Asked whether his message was, in summary, "Boris belt up", Hunt replied: "You could say that".
