Democrats Won't Get Data on Trump Campaign Intel Source

Trump's attack is a continuation of his Wednesday broadside about "spying" on his campaign, following revelations that the Federal Bureau of Investigation relied on a confidential informant named Stefan Halper who made contact with at least Trump campaign officials thought to have longstanding Russian Federation ties - and with the man who hired them both.

Trump demanded the briefing over the weekend, after alleging - without evidence - that former President Barack Obama's Justice Department infiltrated his campaign with a spy.

Over the weekend, the president demanded the Department of Justice to start an investigation into the matter. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan said in a statement that "I can not and will not comment on a classified session" and that "I look forward to the prompt completion of the intelligence committee's oversight work in this area".

The senators, who have quietly objected to Nunes' tactics in the past, were successful, at least in part.

"I look forward to the prompt completion of the intelligence committee's oversight work in this area now that they are getting the cooperation necessary for them to complete their work while protecting sources and methods", Ryan said.

The details continued to be fluid Thursday. Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr was also invited, as was the top Democrat on the Senate intelligence panel, Sen.

John F. Kelly, the White House chief of staff, who Trump asked to help organize the meetings, attended both sessions, as did Emmet T. Flood, a lawyer representing Trump in the Russian Federation investigation.

An investigation by special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald into the disclosure of onetime Central Intelligence Agency operative Valerie Plame shook the George W. Bush White House.

It is unclear whether the Republicans who attended were satisfied with the briefings' outcome.

A congressional source told ABC the network that Flood and Kelly delivered remarks at the top of the second meeting, "it was expressed to them how inappropriate their presence was".

In response to the tweet, the Justice Department immediately asked its inspector general to expand its ongoing investigation to look into whether there was any politically motivated surveillance of the campaign and agreed to hold the classified briefings.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller departs after a closed-door meeting with members of the Senate Judiciary Committee about Russian meddling in the election and possible connection to the Trump campaign, at the Capitol in Washington, June 21, 2017.

Both briefings for will be conducted by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, FBI Director Christopher Wray and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, according to the Department of Justice. The California Democrat said she had directed Schiff to attend in her place so as to make sure "henchmen of the president" do not interfere with the investigation. "They're the same briefing", he said.

Schiff said he was speaking for all the Democrats who attended including top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer, top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi, and top Senate Intelligence Committee Democrat Mark Warner. "They will also be sending a awful message to anyone who works in, or with our nation's intelligence community that the White House will always prioritize partisan politics over protecting the people who help keep this country safe".

The Republican senators did not comment publicly.

In his tweets, Trump also quoted Andrew Napolitano, a former New Jersey Superior Court judge and frequent Fox News commentator, saying that "it's clear that they had eyes and ears all over the Trump campaign".

"I don't have a great answer for them", Comey said of social media companies including Facebook and Twitter, which were major venues for what USA intelligence agencies have said was a Russian-sponsored effort to help President Donald Trump win the 2016 US election.

In an interview with Politico, the former NY mayor Rudy Giuliani, who is also representing Trump, said that information from the meeting could help accelerate the investigation.
