The announcement was made by the Keeper of the Rulers' Seal, Datuk Seri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad.
"If, however, the crescent is not sighted that day, then, Friday, May 18, automatically becomes the first of Ramadan, 1439 AH". A new month in the Islamic lunar calendar begins with a sighting of the moon on 29th of the prevailing month.
They abstain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk for the entire month of Ramadan, with a single sip of water or a puff of a cigarette considered enough to invalidate the fast. Muslims focus on meditative acts like prayer, reading the Quran and charity during this month which will fall on especially long summer days this year for Muslims in the Northern Hemisphere.
"We as a generation are much more aware of our health and wellbeing now so it is a good time to make people aware of what is and isn't good to eat during Ramadan", Dr Huda Al-Kateb said.
Participants have one meal before sunrise, called suhoor, and share another with friends and family after sunset, iftar.

"As so many people unite to celebrate Ramadan, Melania and I join in the hope for a blessed month", he wrote, concluding with the traditional phrase of greeting during the season, "Ramadan Mubarak". Known as Ramzan or Ramadan, the holy month will commence from May 16 in India.
