The CDC's salmonella fact sheet states that the bacteria is responsible for about 1.2 million illnesses, 23,000 hospitalizations, and 450 deaths each year in the USA, with over 80 percent of the illnesses traced to tainted food. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) investigators inspected the Hyde County, N.C., farm and collected samples for testing.
As of Thursday, 35 people have been confirmed with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Braenderup. Initially, 22 people were sickened. Raw Coconut because of potential salmonella contamination. Sixteen people reported eating various egg dishes at different restaurants, according to the CDC.
In February, Triple T Specialty Meats, based in Ackley, Iowa, recalled more than 20,000 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken salad products that may have been contaminated with salmonella.
