Jose Iglesias hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Detroit Tigers a 5-4 victory over Seattle after the Mariners lost standout second baseman Robinson Cano to a fractured hand.
Cano and Ryon Healy homered for the Mariners in the second game, and John Hicks went deep for the Tigers.
The Mariners (22-17, 1-2 in the series) will play a makeup game Minnesota at 4 p.m. PT Monday.
Dan is 2-2 with 4 holds and a 4.38 ERA (6 ER, 12.1 IP) in 13 relief appearances with the Mariners this season.
Cano remained near home plate for a bit after being struck by a pitch from left-hander Blaine Hardy, and Cano eventually went to the dugout while being replaced by a pinch runner. Haniger is hitting.297/.384/.609 with 10 home runs, 30 RBIs and 19 runs scored, while Cano (.286/.386/.421) has produced three homers, 20 RBIs and 22 runs scored. He hasn't missed a game this season and has played in at least 150 in 11 straight years.
Felix Hernandez (5-3) got the win but labored through five innings, allowing five runs and eight hits.
"It needed to be challenged after the fact when I saw it", said bench coach Manny Acta, who was filling in for Scott Servais as Seattle's manager. "We had a miscommunication over the phone about it and I'm not going to point fingers". He was able to get Dee Gordon to ground out to first with the bases loaded to end the game. The under is 4-0-1 in Detroit's last five during game three of a series and 5-2 in their last seven Sunday games. The Mariners have the offensive edge in this one and they have a big edge on the mound with Paxton over Hardy, who is making his first Major League Baseball start after 167 games out of the pen in his career. Wade LeBlanc (0-0) starts for the Mariners against Jake Odorizzi (3-2).
