After huddling for 45 minutes with fellow Republicans to discuss immigration, Trump exited a meeting room only to be shouted at by a handful of House Democrats angry over the thousands of children who have been separated from their parents as they cross into the country.
Harris also noted that the executive order does not say anything about reuniting the more than 2,000 children who have been separated from the parents as part of the policy. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., and administration officials, including Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, Trump continued to falsely place the blame squarely on the shoulders of Democrats in Congress.
Trump pointed to those images in his meeting, saying they'd "affect everybody" but that he was torn.
The Trump administration has faced harsh backlash for its policy, which from April through May separated nearly 2,000 children from the adults they were traveling with, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
The action, according to people familiar with it, wouldn't end the zero tolerance policy, but would aim to keep families together while they are in custody and ask the Department of Defense to help house the detained families. Chinese social media users are scratching their heads over a "Chinese proverb" US President Donald Trump's daughter and advisor Ivanka posted to Twitter as her father prepared for his summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un.
"I don't think either of them can pass right now", Davidson said.
"I didn't like the sight or the feeling of families being separated", Trump said. She said the number of adults and children arriving at the border who fraudulently claimed to be a family group rose 314 percent between October 2017 and February, without specifying the number of cases. The House of Representatives is due to vote on an immigration bill later this week that would limit family separations but allocate $25 billion for a US-Mexico wall, which was promised in Trump's presidential campaign.
Under previous presidents, families of immigrants crossing the border without official paperwork tended to be issued with summonses for court, rather than be detained and split up.
Democrats have gone all-in to draw attention to the family separations.
Ryan and other GOP leaders, however, stopped short of predicting passage of a bill that would address other Republican priorities on immigration while also allowing children to remain with their parents while undergoing prosecution for illegally crossing the border.
Trump has accused Democrats of provoking the current crisis by blocking bills to combat illegal immigration.
President Trump met with House Republicans and essentially told them he would back the GOP compromise bill crafted by leadership and moderates, clearing up a lot of confusion that he caused from last Friday when he said he wouldn't sign it.
The agency's network of immigration jails for single adults is much larger, because ICE leases detention facilities and vacant cells from states and counties across the country. Since early May, 2,342 children have been separated from their parents after crossing the Southern U.S. border, according to the Department of Homeland Security. This has sparked anger over the appearance that his administration is effectively holding children hostage for political concessions.
"The system has been broken for many years, the immigration system, it has been a really bad, bad system. We are prepared to deal on those points", said Rep. Darren Soto (D) Florida.
Instead, the process requires coordination between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which holds numerous parents, and HHS, which takes custody of children and places them with adult "sponsors".
House Republican leaders and more than two dozen lawmakers traveled to the White House on Wednesday afternoon in hopes of rallying support for broader immigration legislation that appeared short of the votes needed. "Do we look away, or do we choose to see something of ourselves and our children?" Instead, the children could be detained with their parents for extended periods.
It contains several of Trump's main priorities, including border wall funding, protecting young "Dreamer" immigrants who were brought to the country as children and curbs on legal immigration programs such as an end to the visa lottery.
