Chief Meteorologist/Climatologist for 11 News in Colorado Springs, said "No, this isn't a firewhirl, it is a legit tornado produced by a thunderstorm that moved across the Weston Pass Fire".
Cal Fire-Butte County also tweeted that more than 100 of its members are working "out of unit" helping fight fires throughout Northern California.
The fire was about 81 percent contained Saturday, but left behind a trail of burned cars and homes.
The Klamathon, which has destroyed 72 structures and blackened almost 30,500 acres (12,340 hectares), was 25 percent contained as of Sunday morning, according to Cal Fire.
The retired Cal Fire firefighter rushed home when his wife called, saying she spotted flames nearby. It was 43 percent contained on Saturday, the officials said.
While no fatalities have been reported, the fire spread in 100-plus degree weather nearly as fast as some residents could flee their homes, the newspaper reported.
Parts of the San Isabel National Forest are closed. The body of a resident was found Friday in the ruins of a home, among 15 destroyed structures tallied so far.
However, the fire continues to spread into the timberland of Klamath and Rogue River-Siskiyou national forests.
It's the first California wildfire to kill a civilian since last December.
There is one evacuation order in Oregon: Colestin Road and Old Highway 99 from the California border to Mt. Ashland Ski Road. Ten structures were counted destroyed but damage assessments were continuing. The blaze has burned about 75 square miles (193 square kilometers) and destroyed 90 structures, including homes, cabins, sheds and garages, since starting Sunday in the mountains.
In Utah, authorities allowed the return of some residents who fled a wildfire near a popular fishing lake 80 miles (130 kilometers) southeast of Salt Lake City.
Officials say the 100-acre (40.5-hectare) fire in Goleta is 80 percent contained Saturday and numerous 2,500 evacuated residents will be able to return by late afternoon.
The fire was partially contained, but crews struggled in steep, rugged terrain. A stretch of busy US Highway 285 between Fairplay and Antero Junction reopened Saturday.
