The Islamic State claimed responsibility on Wednesday for a deadly shooting spree in the Canadian city of Toronto earlier in the week that killed two people, including a 10-year-old girl.

On Sunday 22 July, 2018, on a peaceful evening on busy Danforth Avenue in Toronto, girls aged 10 and 18 were shot and killed in an attack that terrorized this attractive Greek town neighborhood while 13 others were injured, some critically. An autopsy on Hussain was expected Tuesday.

"At this stage of the investigation, we do not know why this has happened yet", Mr Saunders said of the shooting. Even though there seems to be a full court press from some to deny links to possible terrorism or Jihad, sources say, law enforcement agencies are still working up a full profile of whatever they do find.

Lawmakers in Toronto voted Tuesday on several new initiatives to curb gun violence, including hiring 100 more police officers, installing security cameras and gunshot-detecting microphones in the city, and increasing funds for youth and mental health initiatives.

The Greektown shooting comes about three months after the city was shaken by the deaths of 10 people, majority women, killed by a man with an apparent grudge against women who drove into them on a busy street in Toronto's north end.

Hussain's family, in a statement to CBC News, denounced his "horrific actions" and said he was suffering from mental problems. Police say they located the man nearby, on Bowden Street, and that shots were exchanged. "We will mourn those who were lost for the rest of our lives".

To own a gun in Canada, an individual must apply for a licence, pass a background check and pass a firearm safety test. Guns must be kept locked and unloaded and can only be legally carried outside the home with a special permit. "Canada also requires training, a personal risk assessment, two references, spousal notification and criminal record checks".

Of those attending were Toronto Mayor John Tory, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. It passed on a 41-4 vote.

In the wake of the shooting, the city of Toronto is now seeking federal authority to outlaw the sale of handguns and their ammunition within the metropolitan area.

"I grew up in a very safe Toronto-people would say hello at the bus stop and smile, and I hope we would continue to be friendly to each other", Julie said.

But Riccio said: "I already think we live in a great country with great values".

A 29-year-old gunman whose motives are not yet known is said to have started firing a handgun at groups of people while walking along Danforth Avenue, which was bustling with restaurant and cafe patrons.

The older victim has been identified as Toronto resident Reese Fallon, who was to begin studies at McMaster University in the city of Hamilton this September. She was described by family as smart and passionate also held a job at an east-end Loblaw's store, where she worked alongside her friend Samantha Price, the company said.

Canada has relatively strict gun laws and traditionally low levels of gun violence, particularly compared with its neighbor the United States.
