Miscommunication Reigns After Trump's Meeting with Putin

The expression of concern about Russian meddling is a change in tone for the president, who has repeatedly expressed doubts about Russia's role in interfering in the 2016 USA election.

Tom Udall, and lawmakers are no closer now than they were before knowing what happened between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin during their private meeting in Helsinki.

Mueller has not given a timeline for completing his investigation.

Though Moscow saw the Helsinki summit n the two leaders held last week as a success, the fiercely negative reaction by some US politicians to Trump's performance has taken some in Russian Federation aback.

But the first part of Mason's question - the part about wanting Trump to win - is not included in the White House's footage of the event.

Trump gave more credence to Putin’s denials of any Russian meddling than to findings of his own intelligence agencies

During his public appearances with Putin in Helsinki, Trump suggested he believed the Russian president's denial that his intelligence officers interfered with the USA election.

Instead, anger about what some USA lawmakers saw as a too-deferential performance by Trump in Helsinki and his failure to publicly confront Putin over Moscow's alleged meddling in US politics may have made things worse. "Putin and Trump may also meet at other global forums they will participate in, such possibilities will surely be discussed", he said.

But Russia also did not immediately jump at the opportunity to schedule a second summit between the two leaders.

Then on Tuesday, Trump issued a rare clarification and said he misspoke. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders has since sought to argue that the president was only "referring to the claim that his campaign had anything to do with it".

The US Secret Service said in a statement, "All gifts given to the President are subject to thorough security screening".

The White House said last week that Trump had directed Bolton to invite Putin to visit Washington in the fall, moving quickly for a follow-up meeting amid the backlash over Trump's performance at a news conference with Putin following their Helsinki summit last week.

With an eye on US mid-term elections in November, a bipartisan group of senators is pushing the "DETER Act" legislation putting Putin on notice that his country would be hit with more USA sanctions if Russian Federation interferes in future polls. "If anyone had any nefarious motives, they probably picked the wrong technology", he said. Trump's comments provoked widespread outrage, since the American intelligence community had concluded Putin directed operations created to boost Trump over his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.

However, the Washington Post has a debunking out today saying "this is not a conspiracy from the White House", explaining that "at some point in the middle of that question, there's a switch between the feed from the reporters and the feed from the translator" and in the White House feed the question can only be heard "faintly" under the voice of the translator.

Pompeo said he had personally told top Russians that there would be "severe consequences" for new interference in U.S. elections.

The White House official added the transcript has been updated for presidential records.

Yet the skepticism among many in Congress was on full display, with Pompeo facing tough questions from lawmakers demanding to know what Trump and Putin discussed in their two-hour Helsinki summit and, more broadly, whether the administration has an overarching foreign policy plan at all.

"The president was strong in making sure that the world understood that the Minsk path is the right path forward", he said.

On US sanctions over North Korea, Pompeo said it will remain in place till the country eliminates its weapons of mass destruction.
