Giuliani attacks Cohen over Trump Tower report: He's a "pathological liar" USA military plane leaves North Korea with remains of soldiers from Korean War MORE to Moscow for a meeting.
In a reference to the backlash inside the United States after Trump's performance at the Helsinki summit, Putin said: "Despite the difficulties, in this particular case difficulties linked to the internal political situation in the United States, life goes on and our contacts continue".
"I understand very well that President Trump has a wish to have further meetings", Putin said, according to Russian news agency Interfax.
In the following days, Mr. Trump surprised even his own director of national intelligence by inviting Putin to Washington for a follow-up conversation this autumn.
Trump said he had invited Putin to Washington but this week White House aides said the meeting would be delayed until next year.
Putin was speaking to reporters at a summit of Brics countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - in Johannesburg. "And I am ready for that".
Trump later walked back the comments, saying he believed Russian Federation had interfered in the election, but rattled some lawmakers with the White House's announcement that Putin had been invited to Washington, D.C., this fall for a second meeting.
Later, he said: "He has, in fact, the same invitation [to come to Moscow], and I told him so. I repeat once again, if the right conditions for work are created".
"You can criticize him for what he is doing, and some people do criticize him, however, one thing remains absolutely clear - he is committed to fulfilling his campaign promises".
Putin also said he was ready to host Trump in Russia, Interfax and Russian state news agency TASS reported.
