The Internet Can't Stop Roasting Trump For Threatening To 'Shut Down' The Government.

Trump's "zero tolerance" policy of prosecuting migrants entering the US without authorization, his separation of more than 2,500 children from their parents, and botched efforts to reunite many of them has drawn election-year criticism from both parties. A congressional aide said the White House had sent a similar message to Capitol Hill amid widespread anxiety about a potential shutdown as Republicans face tough re-election fights. But GOP leaders are itching to avoid a shutdown starting October 1 - just five weeks before the midterm elections - and Trump himself wants to ensure smooth sailing for confirmation of his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

"If we don't get border security after many, many years of talk within the United States, I would have no problem doing a shutdown", Trump said during a joint news conference at the White House alongside Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte. "We have immigration laws, we have border security, we have all sorts of things going on".

President Trump's tweets pressed Democrats to get on board with voting for funding the U.S-Mexico border wall, getting rid of the visa lottery and catch and release, while moving toward merit-based immigration. "I'll always leave room for negotiation", Trump said when asked whether he would insist on getting all his immigration proposals before government funding runs out.

President Donald Trump reiterated his threat Monday to shut down the government if Congress fails to pass new border security and immigration measures, but he declined to draw a line in the sand.

In the Kentucky radio interview, Mr McConnell did acknowledge that the border funding issue probably would not be resolved until later this year, after the November election.

Ryan said after the meeting: "The president's willing to be patient to make sure that we get what we need so that we can get that done". Desai added that while attorneys could still bring lawsuits around abuse of children in detention without Flores, "litigating every new issue that arises under the Constitution would be far more onerous" and those cases more hard to win.

In response to questions from the senators about reports of women being sexually abused by guards in detention centres, Matthew Albence, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement official, said there were "rigorous" inspections of facilities, with investigations launched on any reports of abuse.

Back in January, the White House put out a press release calling Flores a "deadly loophole" that "handicapped the government's ability to detain" immigrant children, and called on Congress to overturn it.

And that will likely mean far less funding for Trump's proposed border wall than he initially sought, analysts said. The Senate remains in session and is set to take a one-week break the week of August 6, then returning for the rest of the month. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., is hoping to avoid "playing shutdown politics". McConnell canceled most of his chamber's recess to give senators time to work on the annual spending bills.

Senate Appropriations Chairman Richard Shelby, R-Ala., said there's been more progress on spending legislation at this point in the process than in years and said Trump "seemed to be on board" in a previous conversation about the committee's progress.

Some Republican lawmakers doubted the government would be forced to shut down.

This comes in the light of similar threats that Trump has issued in the past, with him saying in March that he would be open to "closing up the country for a while" if he was not to get his wall, the CNN reported.

House Republicans released a spending bill this month that would provide $5 billion next year to build Trump's wall, a plan Trump supports. They do, however, have the strength to derail legislation in the closely divided Senate. That's because border security programs, ports of entry operations, immigrations enforcement and removal operations, and ICE enforcement of homeland security investigations are all exempt from the furloughs that would affect other agencies and even some other department staff.

A senior official at the US agency charged with caring for migrant children believed separating them from their parents carried "significant risk" of harm and said on Tuesday concerns had been raised internally before the Trump administration made it official policy. The president tweeted Tuesday that he did not care about the "political ramifications", adding that "a Government Shutdown is a very small price to pay for a safe and Prosperous America!"
