Theresa May

Although the prime minister insists the choice will be between her deal and no deal, pro-EU lawmakers want further negotiations, or even remaining in the bloc, to be options.

Meanwhile, a "hard Brexit" Conservative faction says leaving without a deal is preferable to May's proposed terms because it would leave Britain free to strike new trade deals around the world.

Asked in an interview for Panorama, asked why she thought Brexit would be good for Britain, she replied: "It gives the United Kingdom opportunities as an independent and sovereign state to build a better future for all our people".

The India-born scientist, who as president of the UK's Royal Society is the country's key advocate for science, warned that Britain is in danger of losing its position as a leading scientific hub in the event of a no-deal or bad-deal scenario in the ongoing negotiations on the country's future ties with the EU. Writing in the newspaper, he raised questions on the handling of Brexit negotiations by the Theresa May government.

That would see goods tracked using a barcode and undergo customs checks on ferries or on arrival at factories, according to a separate report in the Financial Times.

May remains confident of striking an acceptable deal with Brussels. "One of them is the issue of how to avoid a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland".

"We need to challenge the assumptions of both these Irish backstops, or we are heading full throttle for the ditch with a total write-off of Brexit.

This means that our relatives struggle to get visas to come to the United Kingdom for family celebrations, restaurants can not employ skilled chefs from overseas, our temples can not bring in priests, and we can not bring people in for business, cultural or sporting events - as well as the thousands of talented professionals like doctors, teachers and engineers", said Gujarati-origin Priti Patel, former United Kingdom cabinet minister and a prominent pro-Brexit campaigner.

"We are straining at the gnat of the Irish border problem - in fact we haven't even tried to chew the gnat - and we are swallowing the camel of European Union membership in all but name".

The London Mayor explained that with negotiations in disarray and the very real prospect of a "no deal" Brexit - which would be disastrous for Britain, he now believed that the British people should also be given a say on whatever Brexit Theresa May's government managed to negotiate with the other European Union member states.

Today the Times reports details of the new European Union plan that would see technological solutions and a trusted trader scheme to minimise the need for checks at the border.

A diplomatic note seen by The Times reads: "The commission said to be careful because it was not clear what 'miracles" United Kingdom constitutional law could allow. "We are open to discussing other backstops, so we can discuss this text, we can make changes to it", he told them of the EU's former plan.
