Donald Trump, State Dept. say they don’t know what happened to missing Saudi journalist

The Washington Post reported Wednesday evening that United States intelligence intercepts outlined a Saudi plan to detain Mr Khashoggi.

As a contributor to the Post, Khashoggi has written extensively about Saudi Arabia, including criticism of its war in Yemen, its recent diplomatic spat with Canada and its arrest of women's rights activists after the lifting of a ban on women driving.

Turkish officials told Reuters at the weekend they believed he had been killed inside the Saudi consulate.

The dissident Saudi journalist went missing October 2, shortly after he entered the consulate to obtain paperwork related to his upcoming wedding. It said they checked into two hotels in Istanbul on October 2, the day Khashoggi went missing, and left later that day.

Khashoggi left Saudi Arabia a year ago, saying he feared retribution for his criticism of Saudi policy in the Yemen war and its crackdown on dissent.

Turkish police were limited to footage from two street cameras that monitor the street outside the consulate after Saudi officials claimed that security cameras inside the consulate were not working at the time of last week's incident.

But Whitson said that "given that Saudi Arabia will not provide any evidence about Khashoggi's movements in and out of the consulate, they can not be trusted to conduct a genuine -- far less effective -- investigation".

Kislakci also alleged, based on conversations with officials he did not name, that Khashoggi was made to "faint", then was dismembered.

Saudi Arabia insists Khashoggi exited the consulate after a brief visit. It remains unclear when the search will take place.

"We're looking at it very, very seriously".

Turkish officials allege that Jamal Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate. "I mean, you're affecting us and, you know, they're always quick to jump that way".

His comments came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump expressed concern about the situation.

Meanwhile, Mr Trump told reporters in the Oval Office he has a call in to Khashoggi's fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, who has appealed to the president and first lady Melania Trump for help.

Treading softly, the United States is asking its major ally Saudi Arabia to investigate the odd disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, an avowed and vocal foe of the Saud family that rules the country.

"They took us from the top to the bottom of the building, it is a four-storey building, it was obviously an usual event they said they had never before opened their doors in such a way it clearly was an usual move for them", Evans said. The Post said "a person close to the investigation" shared the image with them.

"We want to find out what happened", Trump said Thursday morning in an interview with Fox & Friends.

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said this week that the kingdom would allow Turkey to search the consulate for Khashoggi.

Erdogan, whose AK Party is rooted in political Islam, also supported a government in Egypt led by the Muslim Brotherhood, which Saudi Arabia has designated a terrorist movement.
