World Mental Health Day is organised by the World Health organisation and aims to raise awareness around mental health issues.
The findings were revealed as St John Ambulance announced it would host its first national summit on mental health best practice in the workplace this December - just over a year since it began working with Mental Health First Aid England to train people in this area.
Mental illness is the leading cause of both disability and premature death in Australia.
Mental illness costs society almost $200 billion annually, often striking young adults who, as wage earners, would otherwise contribute to the economy and to their own welfare. Minorities tend to have less access to and availability of mental health services, and according to the National Association of Mental Illness, African-Americans and Hispanic Americans used mental health services at about half the rate of whites in the past year.
"Most people with depression are not suicidal, but most suicidal people are depressed, hence the importance of knowing the symptoms of depression", she said.
