decision to recall Wayne Rooney for a one-off cap against the USA.
In the same summer that Ronaldo sealed a £100m switch to Juventus, Rooney signalled the final throes of his career by joining Major League Soccer side DC United.
Rooney, who now plays for MLS side DC United, had ended his worldwide career with 119 caps and a record 53 goals.
Wayne Rooney will come out of worldwide retirement temporarily to make a farewell appearance for England against the United States.
"I miss him. The future, nobody knows, maybe we'll play one day together again".
The match - which will be held at Wembley and will raise funds for the Wayne Rooney Foundation - will be the DC United forward's 120th for England.
He said: "It was great that Gareth Southgate called me this week to tell me he wanted me back in the England squad for the upcoming matches".
Since arriving in D.C.in July, Rooney scored 12 goals and recorded 7 assists in his first 20 MLS appearances, leading United on a late-season run to the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs. "It's fitting the match will be against the U.S.".
Rooney, the former United and Everton forward, who scored 53 goals for the Three Lions, announced his retirement from worldwide football in August 2017.
Having made his global debut in 2003 as England's youngest ever player, Rooney surpassed Bobby Charlton as his country's leading scorer in 2015.
Both men still have plenty of football at the highest level left in them, with Rooney about to rejoin the England fold for one final worldwide outing, and it could be that their paths cross again before either slips into retirement.
England will use the match against the United States of America as preparation for their UEFA Nations League match against Croatia on November 18.
'This tribute to Wayne is a unique opportunity that is befitting of our nation's record goalscorer'.
